About the National Security and Law Society

NSLS is an international non-profit organization devoted to fostering awareness of national security-related issues in the law. Comprised of chapters at law schools across the United States and Canada, NSLS strives to assist interested law students and professionals in their academic and professional pursuits in this field, and the law. NSLS strives to create an effective, non-partisan forum for informed discourse on U.S. national security policy and foreign affairs.

Our tri-fold mission is:

(a) To foster interest in, and understanding of, the legal and policy aspects and ramifications of national security by sponsoring speakers and programs concerning the many issues covered by this umbrella;
(b) To aid members in their pursuits of careers in these fields; and
(c) To contribute to the development of the law as it relates to national and international security.

What NSLS Offers

First and foremost, the National Security and Law Society (NSLS) offers its chapters contact with like-minded people. We connect law students with other law students interested in national security and professionals already working in the field.

In addition, we offer the following:

•  Nationally recognized events, like EMININT. Each year a law school with an NSLS Chapter hosts the Annual Symposium on Emerging Issues in National and International Security (EMININT). During EMININT, scholars and practitioners discuss emerging national security issues. Topics have ranged from ethical dilemmas in espionage to lobbying in the new national security era.

•  Professional Contacts. With NSLS you will have built-in access to professionals around the country and even the world. Many of these professionals have already spoken at events hosted by other Chapters. Some have acted as mentors to Chapter members. Feel free to ask them to speak at your school, or just get to know them.

•  A forum for discussing ideas. Other members of NSLS have been there. We have all spent time coming up with ideas, planning events, and tracking down qualified speakers. Our members are willing to offer advice, make suggestions when asked, and advertise your Chapter events at nearby law schools.

•  Tips for how to get your chapter started. We can offer advice on how to attract members, how to advertise events, and get you in touch with local mentors.

•  Information on jobs and other events. NSLS sends information about internships and job openings though the NSLS Google Group . Additionally, NSLS will let you know about events sponsored by other groups interested in national security. (If you were previously a member of our Yahoo group, please join us on the new Google Group).
